We are committed to presenting both entertaining and memorable shows, but also to working closely with the curricula of all Australian schools.
Tony has practical experience in teaching every year level at some time in his career from levels Prep through to Year 12. Therefore every show he produces is sure to relate to each student on both an educational and entertaining level.
Having taught Drama, English and in Libraries in both Primary and Secondary schools, Tony saw a need for dramatic curriculum to help students explore themes and ideas in a new and engaging way.
TBE use a variety of different genre within each show to explore themes and ideas.
We cast some of the finest actors in the country who bring with them a world of experience in both Children's and Musical Theatre.
All our shows are adaptable to a broad range of ages to ensure every student in your school can benefit from the TBE experience.
With follow up activities for each year level provided in worksheets and lesson plans for teachers, we ensure every student's individual learning style is completely catered to in each show.
Where it all began ... Book Week
Tony Appleby B.Ed created the company in 1998. Since then "TBE" has been growing from strength to strength.
We began with an extremely popular series of shows designed to showcase short listed books from The Children's Book Council Of Australia 'Book Of The Year Awards' during Book Week. Our aim was not to come to schools as a traditional 'story-teller', but in fact to turn each year's most performance friendly short listed books into full-length plays. As a result, students can discover the books in an entirely different way.
Pantomime/Theatre In Education, Puppets and Music
Our more traditional style of primary school pantomime and theatre in education has also been very popular with schools.
2007 saw our newest musical show "Bully Bull Ring" touring throughout Australia where Primary students are shown a variety of practical ways to effectively deal with bullying in schools.
2002 saw the first year of our annual huge hit Christmas show "Rudolph's Recruits" where Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer interviews all singing and dancing Australian animals to pull Santa's sleigh instead of the reindeer. This show will tour again in 2008.
The feature presentation for 2001 & 2006, "Our Greatest Australian" gave students the chance to vote for their favourite Australian after a musical and dramatic talent quest of 200 years of Australians.
"Tony Bones 2000" offered students a cavalcade of adventure through Music, Dance, Art and Drama. The concepts of friendship, racism, prejudice and understanding were tackled by Tony Bones, his best friend and a multitude of puppets.
We often use a combination of puppets, mask, suit work, costume and voice in our shows to add new elements of drama for the students and introduce themes that students will enjoy exploring.
Our shows include original music relating to the theme of the individual piece. Tony Appleby (B.Ed) and either of TBE's brilliant musical directors Tim Smith (Dip.Ed) and Luke Hunter (Dip.Ed) write all of the songs and music for the shows. Their songs vary in style depending on the show, but always have the audience clapping and dancing along, or crying in the aisles, depending on what's required.
