About the book:

Ruby is in charge of this book. And she ll tell you something right now. There are NO BEARS in it. Not even one.

Ruby wants to tell you a story. A story with absolutely no bears. You don t need bears for a book. You need pretty things like fairies and princesses and castles. And maybe funny things and exciting things but definitely no bears!

  • A humorous and exciting picture book from Meg McKinlay, with illustrations by Leila Rudge the team that created Duck For a Day
  • The multilayered text and illustrations will have kids reading the book over and over
  • Many well-known fairytale references throughout

No Bears is such an amazing picture book to dramatize. It is full of cute & clever fairytale references that are integrated throughout the show with puppetry and song in such clever and quirky ways. The music is inspiring, the owl and the pussy cat make a special appearance, the wonderful monster of Ruby’s imagination stars throughout, the loveable bear saves the day and the huge audience interaction in the party scene at the end of the book will get everyone up and dancing.

From the author's website: No Bears Trivia

Curiously, the story that became No Bears grew out of my obsession with ducks. I had been writing another book about a duck called Max and every time I sat down to work, he would pop up in my head - QUACK! - and demand attention. It got to the point where everything I wrote seemed to involve a duck.

One day, out of frustration, I typed the line THERE ARE NO DUCKS IN THIS STORY! And then I went ooh. Because that had given me an idea. It sounded like the voice of a little girl. A little girl confidently telling a story, thinking she was in charge of it and knew everything about it, but all the while in the background, there were other things going on. Things that only the reader could see. Ducks, in fact. Doing duckish things, and actually driving the story forward.

The idea evolved in fits and starts over a couple of years, and by the time I had a draft to send to my editor, the first duck book - Duck for a Day - was already scheduled for publication. I talked it over with my editor and we decided it was best not to do two books about ducks so close together, so we decided to go with bears, which work equally well for the purposes of the story. Since I know all this background, I can't help smiling to myself over the fact that in the end there really are no ducks in this story.

And of course, there are no bears either. Honestly.

About the author:

Meg McKinlay grew up in Bendigo, Victoria, in a book-loving, TV- and car-free household. A poet as well as a children's writer, Meg developed an affinity with the Japanese language after going on an exchange year in high school, and went on to complete a PhD in Japanese Literature. She lives with her family near the ocean in Fremantle, Western Australia, and is an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Western Australia, where she has taught Australian Literature, Japanese, and Creative Writing. Meg divides her time between teaching and writing, a balance that swings wildly between chaos and calm but she is always busy cooking up more books.

Reviews for the book:

"What can Meg McKinlay be doing calling a picture book 'No Bears?' Of course picture books have bears! All those fairy tales with bears as the main subject... but wait, the cover shows a bear holding up books and the main character Ruby.

This is an invitation to open the book and find out just what is going on.

Ruby knows all about books how they use words and begin with 'once upon a time' She wants to write her own once upon a time and happily ever after book without ever casting a bear in the lead role.

'I'm in charge of this book so I know everything about it- including the most important thing, which is that there are NO BEARS in it.'

Thankfully Leila Rudge is drawing her own subtext to the book and includes a bear whenever she can- a behind the scenes bear, almost like a postscript on the main story line. But very much an integral part of the story.

Everything is unfolding according to story- book plan until we come to the cast of the monster- oh no! The story and characters begin to have a life of their own- a bit like Meg and Leila as they write and illustrate this story. A great picture book develops a soul of its own.

Oh no cried the princess, 'SOMEBODY SAVE ME' And so SOMEBODY did.

This book is a delight, as a shared read with a 'little' audience, there will be chuckles and comments and suggestions. All the hallmarks of a great picture book. Highly recommended." Lorraine Marwood. Words into writing.

'No Bears has been attracting praise and epithets like ‘instant classic', and no wonder ... This is a book that will delight children and adults alike, and will doubtless become a storytime staple in libraries and pre-schools everywhere.'
- writingWA review, the West Australian

" Ruby wants to tell a great story about wonderful things. She is also determined to exclude bears at all costs. She’s sick and tired of tales containing bears.

Ruby creates a beautiful princess living in a faraway castle with her parents. There’s a deep dark forest and a monster. What better story could there possibly be? Ruby is so busy saying there will be no bears that her story misses some very important details.

Her characters are a bit forgetful. They need a little bit of help. The fairy is so busy painting scenes for Ruby’s story, she misplaces her wand. When the monster kidnaps the princess, poor fairy is nowhere to be seen. Who saves the day, you might ask? Well, you’ll have to look very carefully at each page to find out.

Is Ruby right? Is this the prettiest, most exciting, scariest story book ever? And are there really no bears?

No Bears is a delightful ‘look and find’ tale for tiny tots (3+). Humour hiding in the illustrations complements Ruby’s tale to perfection. It is the funny side of the story that will draw No Bears from the book shelf on repeated bedtimes. What better way is there to drift off to sleep than with a giggle?

As the audience grows a little older, the poignant side of No Bears might reveal itself. Ruby’s attempt to exclude a favourite character backfires. Who is excluded in the end, even though they don’t realise it?

Hmmm. Food for thought for every age." Kids Book Review

Ella wants to tell you a story – a story with absolutely no bears. You don’t need bears for a book. You need pretty things like fairies and princesses and castles and maybe funny things and exciting things. In Ella’s kind of story, there are no bears in the village or the castle or the deep dark forest or faraway lands. But there might be . . . a monster! Riffing on well-known fairy-tale themes, this fun, offbeat story is perfectly matched by playful illustrations with a running visual joke that will keep even bear lovers smiling.
Ella is in charge of this book, and she will tell you something right now. There are NO BEARS in it. Not even one.

Littlebug and Turkeybird Make Things Up: Once upon a time there were no bears! No bears and a big monster! Haha! This is one of the best best best books ever! We both love it so much we started making our own stories up and making movies of them. Mom tried to put them up but it didn’t work for some reason.

We always like to pretend about castles and fairy godmothers with magic dust & wands. One thing we always say is that there are no bears in this book, but mom keeps telling us there is a big bear hiding somewhere. We don’t believe her. There are no bears! Only a happily ever after and a princess who tells a super fun story!

Mom’s Two Cents: Books filled with bears! That’s all Ella can find and she’s sick of it! Her last resort and only solution…create her own book without any bears and a happily ever after fit for a princess. Is it possible though that her book is being sneakily guided by the one thing she detests? Ella’s happily ever after ends with a twist that will leave readers in stitches and possibly even making up their own stories that may or may not be filled with bears.

No Bears by Meg McKinlay has turned out to be one of our absolute favorite picture books this year! Firstly I must say that I personally adore the illustrations done by Leila Rudge. Without any doubt in my mind this is the perfect blend of story and illustration, one without the other would simply not be the same and definitely have a different feeling entirely. Rudge’s delightfully whimsical characters bring to life McKinlay’s unique and often quite hilarious story. In the matter of a few weeks our family has fallen in love with the little bear that pokes his head out here and there. This is absolutely a picture book where both the illustrations and the story stand out above so many others.

One of the most appealing aspects of the book is also the way it lends itself to a young reader’s imagination. Like Littlebug and Turkeybird mentioned, from the first time we started reading No Bears they started making up their own “fairytales”. It’s been one of the neatest things to hear! Usually they go away for a few minutes with their iPhone and just as I begin to wonder what they’re up to they come out with an entire “story” recorded. (I really did try to get it off the phone, but I still can’t figure it out!) Of course, many of their new fairytales include monsters, princesses, fairy godmothers and absolutely no bears! Within the pages of this adorable little story about a girl on a mission to create her own fairytale free of bears a new world has opened up and more creativity is pouring out of both of my kiddos.

No Bears by Meg McKinlay is a brilliantly unique story about a little girl with a huge imagination and with no room for bears. Illustrated by the talented Leila Rudge, the characters come to life as you follow the journey of a monster in search of a princess to read him a story. As you turn the pages you begin to see that this little girl, Ella, is perhaps a bit misguided in her dislike of this very helpful creature and as this particular bear helps out readers won’t be able to resist a giggle here and there. No Bears is by far our favorite picture book this year! Both Littlebug and Turkeybird have gained so much by reading it and have no doubt begun their own collections of fairytales to be read on a rainy day. We can’t wait to see what else the marvelous duo of Meg McKinlay and Leila Rudge bring us in the future, no doubt it will be well worth the wait!

The1st daughter Recommends: Ages 3 to 8. Read and watch as young mind’s creativity and imagination expand before your very eyes. A hilarious tale for young and old alike!" www.theresabook.com

"Not only will young readers have a ball following along with Meg McKinlay's tale of monsters and princesses, they'll also love all of the action going on outside the book, and the appearances of the bear itself.  Leila Rudge's beautiful illustrations reminiscent of Oliver Jeffers are wonderfully chaotics, and complement this book for readers who are eager for a good story or two."  Holly Harper, Children's Book Specialist. Readings

The little girl who narrates Meg McKinlay's picture book, "No Bears" is determined to tell a fairy tale without any "horrible furry bears slurping honey in awful little caves." After stipulating that there will be no bears of any kind, either in the castle or in the deep, dark forest of her story, she begins to unfurl a dramatic adventure. Illustrator Leila Rudge handles this double narration cleverly, by allowing her storyteller to interact with her own tale in the margins.

In delicate, curlicued drawings, we see an evil monster stomping through the pages to kidnap a princess "so she could read him bedtime stories every night." Rescue comes when the princess cries out, "Someone save me!" and someone does. Who is this someone? Children ages 5-7 will have been chortling all along because they know that the princess is protected by a fairy godmother who happens to be . . . a bear. One need go no farther, but parents who see the Divine Hand in man's affairs could, if they wanted, point to deeper possible meanings in this charming fable.  Meghan Cox Gurdon, Wall Street Journal

A storyteller spins a tale of her own devising—while the pictures tell a somewhat different one.

“I’m tired of bears. Every time you read a book, it’s just BEARS BEARS BEARS,” grumps the young narrator. Claiming that you don’t need them, she proceeds to craft a story about a monster who sets out to steal a princess and is ultimately foiled by a fairy godmother. Fair enough—but as is evident from the episode’s first page on, the godmother hovering watchfully just beyond the edges of each scene is unmistakably ursine. Framed as ring-bound notebook pages, Rudge’s pale, fine-lined illustrations feature a comfy royal family and a not-very-scary monster that resembles a misshapen, rubber limbed frog. There are also an owl and a pussycat, three pigs, gingerbread men, a girl in a red hood and assorted other familiar figures looking on with increasing puzzlement as the narrator resolutely ignores the elephant—or in this case, the bear—in the room, even after she reaches a “happy ever after.”

Young fans of David Wiesner’s Three Pigs (2001) and other metafictive romps will be properly amused.  Kirkus Reviews

The formats are different, but I found the same delightful sense of humour I appreciated in Duck for a Day... Ruby is positive of one thing: you don't need bears for a story. What you need are pretty or funny or exciting or scary things, maybe even monsters and giants. She's over bears - "…horrible furry bears slurping honey in grotty little caves." Ruby is a great character. She shows herself to be one of those young girls who knows exactly what she wants and is wholly intent on her goal. The subtext of course is Rudge's sabotaging Ruby with pictures of a bear peeping from each page. I loved the humour of Ruby's determination, forthrightness and anti-bear stance juxtaposed with the onlooking, helpful (and finally life-saving) bear, and kids will too.

There are lots of references to fairy tales and rhymes that children will recognise and enjoy pointing out, like an owl and a pussycat rowing the monster in a bathtub, and a girl letting down her long golden hair. This makes No Bears an excellent choice for teachers and librarians looking for fairy tale resources.

Rudge's art work is just gorgeous. I love the limited palette of colours she's chosen, the patterns and texture, the quirky characters. Most of all, children will adore the little surprises she puts on each page for the reader to nod at, giggle about and mull over. It's also a great picture book to use for developing visual literacy in kids - there are so many different kinds of visual formats. From a diagram of paper crown instructions, to a map of faraway lands, to those amazingly detailed yet uncomplicated pictures - all will hone children's observation skills and inspire them to create their own fantastical magical adventures.

Kids need books like No Bears. I loved it, and I think your kids will too.  The Book Chook

Author Meg McKinley’s clever text is gorgeously complemented by the quirky digital illustrations of Leila Rudge for a whole which is whimsical, humorous and, simply delightful. A fun bedtime read full of gentle giggles for younger readers, with perhaps a bit of a message about inclusivity and friendship for older readers.

"Great Lakes Council sponsored our local schools by helping to pay for Tony Bones Show for Forster PS and Holy Name students.  We were very lucky to have this visit.  Thank you, we enjoyed the show!

Infants students watched a fun packed lively show, from the Book Week Picture section, called “No Bears”.  This story shows us that kids can create wonderful stories and craft with simple things like scissors, crayons and pencils.  Some lucky people got to go up on stage and join in the show.

During the performance, two actors created the scenes in the books using simple costumes, music, songs, puppets, props and active back drops to tell the story.  Tony showed us the secrets on how to make these props and back drops work.

“We liked that they used things we know like “Happily ever after”, “Once upon a time” and “The End”.  (Year one)

“I liked that you could shout NO BEARS because that is how it is in the book. Capitals means shout.”  (Kinder)

“It was so funny that we couldn't’t stop laughing, especially the monster part”. (Year Two)

“I liked it when the monster kept saying and doing funny things, and when Ruby said NO BEARS loudly” by Ashley S. 2/31

Jett C. 2/31 liked “when the monster did a dummy spit behind the curtain.”

Nathan 2/31 – “My best part at Tony Bones, when I was watching the show, was when the monster fell at the end.  The funniest part was when Adam went up on stage and held up the fairy god mother when it was talking.  It made everyone laugh." Forster Primary School, Forster, NSW

"Terrific engagement of students. Loved the involvement of the children eg. making the crown etc. Excellent music and dancing. Great to have the children dancing too. Good review of book at end - was very good to keep it short. Thanks for your efforts - it's a sparkling start to our week!" Ararat North Primary School, Ararat, VIC

"It was absolutely fabulous!! I wish I could see the other show too... My preschool class sang the monster chant 'oogie boogie....(however the rest goes)' for the ENTIRE day!! they loved it... I thought it was lots of fun (obviously my kids loved it) great timing, not too long. Really good!.. It was wonderful! Very engaging, very funny and the book chat at the end was brilliant too, particularly the part about students having all the materials they needed to write their own stories! My students all had fantastic things to say and I heard lots of positive chatter while I was on duty in the preschool too!.. It was a fantastic show and kept the students very engaged... I've seen many shows and I was blown away by the talent and professionalism of the 'Bones". I am astounded at the sheer depth and quantity of ideas and elements they teased out and packed into the show so seamlessly (dance, song, poetry etc.) the audience involvement, the age-appropriateness, the Q and A session. Absolutely flawless! I just want to know when we can see them again! Pretty please make it an annual thing!!... The kids thought it was absolutely fantastic and could;t stop talking about the bear, the monster and Ruby. they came away with some brilliant ideas for their own writing and as soon as we got back to the classroom, put pencil to paper!.. Very entertaining, for children and adults. Funny, informative, creative. Fantastic use of costume, song and voices... I thought the ‘Tony Bones’ performance was professional, lively and appealing to all ages. Well done!.. I thought the ‘Tony Bones’ performance was professional, lively and appealing to all ages... I love live theatre opportunities so even though I am the Numeracy coach in the school – I snuck in. The unbridled joy on the faces of the children was worth every cent we paid. It was a lovely interpretation of the book (in fact it made me rethink my opinion of the book) and the kids could not have been more engaged. Photos of staff and kids will show there was great enjoyment and learning. Well done!.. At lunch after the show, I listened to some children in the library choosing picture books off the shelf and working out how they would make it into a performance... My kids ran up to me after school so excited about what they saw.  The youngest said it was amazing and the older child (3/4) said she and her friends were going to open their own performance company and travel around Australia doing that. Harrison School, Harrison, ACT

"Very engaging - love the way you included volunteers to help make props and get involved in the story... Kids loved it! Lots of laughs and love the way it follows the book so well... Very creative story with (what I think) was a hard novel to work with for your show! Such clever props and the door backdrops were a great idea. Thanks again for so many laughs!.. Another great performance - the children were very engaged. Very entertaining, great props and interpreted story really well!.. Fantastic! Had the kids in fits of laughter! Love the added details and songs to compliment the story. Impressive props and backgrounds... Interpreted the story very well and made it easy for students to follow. Props were again really well made and matched details in the book. Another very entertaining performance! Students were really engaged during the whole performance."Ringwood Heights Primary School, Ringwood, VIC

I liked the way you examined the story's structure. It was also good to discuss the illustration of the "lone" items and how that was used to convey the sense of loneliness and distance. Also, the song you sang was poignant; I loved it. Lots of fun, Thank you... The students enjoyed the performance greatly. Your follow up at the end was excellent. As a teacher of 5 and 6 year olds not all students connected to what the story really told and its hidden messages, after viewing your show they have a greater understanding... A great show. The play was entertaining and the actors were engaging and kept the audience’s attention well. The costumes were good and added to the characters. The music/songs were fitting to the story. Very friendly/approachable attitude to the children during question time, all questions were answered sufficiently.” Highfields Prepatory School, Lindfield, NSW

Clever and creative staging of this story opened up depths and a breath that reading the book alone did not achieve. Variety kept all ages engaged and entertained. Love the gnomes and the train, slow motion sequence was great. The very emotional song about parents separating, deeply affected some students. The actors and the story line “picked them up” again and they were soon laughing again. Will happily recommend this to other schools.” Mountain District Christian School, Monbulk, VIC

Once again a fantastic show and the kids loved it. We had read the story to the children beforehand and were very curious about how you would translate it to a stage performance. All the staff commented that they wanted to re-read it and find all the things they hadn’t noticed and only discovered through your performance. It is a great way for the kids (and teachers!) to learn how to delve into a story and discover the writers intentions and at the same time have fun. We also want to promote a love of music & drama as they learn so much from seeing a performance close up.” Pleasant Street P.S., Ballarat, VIC

“Very well done. ALL our students enjoyed the performance, so if all our students got something out of it you have got to be doing something right. Staff enjoyed the show too. “The performance was fantastic. Very entertaining and the kids talked about it for ages after, there were some great innovations on the story and "extra" bits that the kids hadn't picked up on in the story like the dinosaur lady and the songs. Overall, a fantastic show... This was one the best productions that I've seen relating to a dramatization of a book. The performers engaged the Kinder - Grade 2 and special education students by encouraging participating and the children LOVED it. E.g. train carriage. Of particular note was how they dealt with emotion i.e.. the brother and sister having to leave each other - this was related with empathy and professionalism. I'm sure the author would have been pleased. It tapped into my emotion. I loved the puppetry and props. Their slow motion segment was brilliant. Overall, please ask them back! Just great!... “Just to pass on how much fun my Year 1 students had during the Tony Bones performance. It was entertaining and funny, particularly the slow motion scene. Some said they cried during the scene when he’s expressing how alone he felt when Violet left. I think it was very real for them. We have had two students who have left our class this year, and it was something they could really relate to. They were able to express they felt a bit scared during the ghost scene... It was a great message about using our imaginations and getting off the computers. It was very interactive, and the students were really happy to be able to actually participate in the show. And the end, when Tony came out to talk to the children and answer questions was very beneficial. Thank Tony very much, from all of us... We loved the performance. It was full of energy, brilliantly performed with great variety and entertainment. The singing and dancing was superb. The ‘bringing to life’ of the picture book was so imaginatively and creatively put together.
